Reference reading, study resources and reading guidance

Central library

The library supports classroom study and reference reading of Arabic and Islamic texts. Ask the office about available books, reading access and borrowing arrangements. Keep books clean, return them as instructed and consult your teacher when selecting material for your course.

A companion to classroom learning

A library gives the student an opportunity to return to a subject outside the immediate setting of a lesson. Reading a passage again, checking a term and comparing an explanation with the relevant text are useful parts of study. The central library’s educational purpose is to support that attentive reading. Information about the books currently available and access arrangements can be obtained from the office, so a learner can choose material relevant to the course being studied.

Read with a clear purpose

Before opening a reference book, it helps to know what is being looked for: a word meaning, an explanation of a passage or background to a subject. This makes reading more focused and makes it easier to record useful notes. A teacher can help identify a suitable level of material. A difficult book is not always the most useful starting point; introductory explanations can prepare a learner to approach more detailed study with greater understanding.

Care for books and shared reading spaces

A shared library depends on consideration for the next reader. Keeping books clean, handling pages carefully and following the office’s instructions about use and return help preserve access for others. Personal notes should be kept separately rather than written in a shared book. Quiet, attentive reading and respect for another student’s study make the library a useful part of the educational environment.

Using online resources alongside guidance

Online reading tools can help with finding a passage, listening to recitation or exploring vocabulary. They should be used with attention to the source and with teacher guidance when interpretation is involved. A search result alone does not explain a whole subject. Keeping track of the book, passage or collection being consulted helps a student return to it later and discuss a question more clearly. The resource links on this page provide starting points for that kind of reading.
